A lathe does not let you rush. The wood turns, the tool meets it, and the shape arrives at whatever pace the material allows. Chanda was made that way, segment by segment, each one turned from solid maple until the column found its rhythm.
The colour came after. Organic milk paint, worked by hand into the turned hollows between each maple section, chalky and soft rather than glossy. It is the kind of colour that settles into wood instead of sitting on top of it, and it holds the warmth of the material underneath.
At 64 inches the lamp reads as a totem before it reads as a light. It stands rather than occupies, and it looks as considered from across the room as it does up close.
Three finishes, one form.
Chanda Anmol keeps everything quiet. Every turned waist is finished in soft matte white, so the piece reads as a single sculptural column and lets the maple grain carry the interest.
Chanda Basant is the bright one, named for spring and the kite festival. Mustard yellow, deep blue, forest green and a deep red, each waist a different colour, moving up the column like a sky full of kites.
Chanda Kohra takes its name from mist. Sage, pale dusty blue, and chalky mint, muted and low in contrast, so the colour appears slowly rather than announcing itself.
All three come with a grey linen drum shade. A white shade is available on request.
