Originally designed as sculptural paperweights, the Jhum-ka wooden hangers have found a renewed purpose in our increasingly paperless world. Their elegant form and smooth, rounded edges make them ideal as wall hooks or decorative clothes hangers. Left uncovered, their pastel-toned faces serve as artistic accents, blending function with beauty.

My wife suggested reimagining these vibrant, handcrafted pieces in our homes. I’m excited to reintroduce them as utilitarian objects and small sculptures with presence and personality.

Craftsmanship: The Lacquered Wood Technique

Each hanger is made using a traditional lacquered wood technique. This involves turning the wood on a lathe and applying colored lacquer — a material akin to sealing wax, which melts through the heat of friction and adheres smoothly to the surface. The piece is then polished using the dry stem of a palm leaf, followed by an oiled muslin cloth to produce a brilliant, resilient finish.

Unlike painted wood, lacquered wood is highly durable and resistant to dust, heat, and humidity, making these hangers as practical as they are beautiful. While this ancient method may be simple in tools, it is rich in refinement and heritage, preserving the essence of a timeless craft.
