From Clay to Garden: The Making of Bulbul, Our Handcrafted Ceramic Bird Feeder

At Tahir Mahmood Design, we believe that the most extraordinary objects are not manufactured — they are made. Slowly, intentionally, and with a deep respect for the craft traditions that have shaped our design philosophy over three decades.

Today, for the first time, we're pulling back the curtain on the making of Bulbul — our handcrafted ceramic bird feeder, designed and made right here in Toronto, Canada.

Before It Hangs From Your Balcony, It Starts Here

Every Bulbul begins not as a finished object, but as a possibility — raw clay in the hands of a skilled artisan. Working alongside master craftsmen in our Toronto studio, each feeder is shaped by hand, smoothed with care, and refined piece by piece before it ever sees the kiln.

This is the part of the process that rarely gets seen. The unhurried work that happens before the beauty. The studio shelves lined with pieces drying slowly. The craftsman's eye moving over every curve and contour, looking for what doesn't belong.

Over three decades of working alongside master craftsmen — from the pottery studios of Lahore to the workshops of the Greater Toronto Area — has taught us one thing above all else: there is no shortcut to something that is truly felt.

The Kiln: Where Clay Becomes Ceramic

Once shaped and dried, each Bulbul is carefully loaded into the kiln — a moment that requires as much precision as the shaping itself. The feeders are fired at high heat in a slow, deliberate process that transforms soft, fragile clay into a material durable enough to weather every Canadian season.

This kiln-firing process is what separates a truly handcrafted ceramic piece from the mass-produced alternatives that flood the luxury home decor market. It is also what gives each Bulbul its refined, smooth finish — a surface that feels as considered as it looks.

After firing, every piece is cooled gradually and inspected by hand. Only then does it leave the studio.

Two Materials, One Design Philosophy

Bulbul is available in two timeless material expressions, each with its own distinct character.

The ceramic edition offers a smooth, refined finish — clean and architectural, at home in a modern garden or a minimalist balcony setting. It reflects our long-standing admiration for the functional precision of the Bauhaus movement: form in service of purpose, never at the expense of beauty.

The terracotta edition brings a warmer, earthier character — a nod to the rich material heritage of South Asian craft traditions that have shaped our design sensibility since the very beginning. Where the ceramic speaks quietly, the terracotta resonates with warmth.

Both are expressions of the same core philosophy: that luxury garden decor should be as thoughtfully made as anything inside your home.

A Bird Feeder Designed for the Canadian Garden

Measuring 11 inches across and 4 inches deep, Bulbul is designed to hang from a balcony hook or tree branch with a sturdy five-foot stainless steel cable — lightweight enough to move with the breeze, substantial enough to endure the elements.

Carefully placed drainage holes keep seed dry through rain and snow, and the minimal circular form provides a natural perch that attracts an impressive range of local birds across Southern Ontario — from Goldfinches and Cardinals to Blue Jays, Chickadees, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers, and many more.

This is handmade garden decor that does something. It enlivens your outdoor space, nourishes your local bird population, and invites you to slow down and pay attention to the world just outside your window.

Luxury That Is Felt, Not Just Seen

At Tahir Mahmood Design, our design philosophy has always lived at the confluence of utility and beauty. From our award-winning mortar and pestle to our hand-lathe-spun maple wood floor lamps, every piece in our collection is a testament to what handmade craftsmanship can achieve when it is guided by genuine artistic vision.

Bulbul is no different. It is minimal in form, generous in purpose — and quietly alive with the kind of warmth that only comes from something made slowly, by hand, with care.

Each feeder is carefully packed in a sturdy, impact-resistant box and ships worldwide.
