Luma Table lamp [TOTEM Series]

Luma came together the way most of the Totem lamps did. Over time I made pieces at different moments, a turned form here, a ring of wood there, some finished and some set aside without a clear purpose yet. When I finally sat down to make this series, they started finding each other, one resting on another until the proportion felt right. Luma is one of those moments.

Most of it is wood, turned on the lathe. A tall, pale column rises from the matte black metal foot, its grain running long and straight with a fine natural line through it. Above that, the lamp steps inward ring by ring, through soft white and blush toned pieces, before narrowing into a slim white neck just beneath the socket.

The shade is where my background in graphic design comes in. I created the image printed on it, a wood knot with its rings spreading outward, so the grain of the lamp carries on into the light itself. When the lamp is lit, the knot glows through the fabric, warm and slightly soft, like timber held up to the sun. The shade is made locally in Ontario.

This is a one-of-a-kind piece from the Totem series. I design, shape, and finish each one myself. No two pieces in this series are the same, and once this lamp is gone, it will not be made again.
